Growing up a classically trained musician, learning to play what's not on the page instead of what's on it was one of the most mentally challenging things I've done - it stretched my mind in new ways, to new corners that hadn't been filled before.
I played in an all-violin jazz ensemble led by Victor Lin and a hybrid ensemble with classical instruments playing improvised music led by Ole Mathisen.
When you play improvised ensemble music you're so aware of what all the other people on your team are doing that you feel this sense of awareness and perception that's outside your own physical body. Have you ever seen someone staring into the middle distance as they access some tacit knowledge? They're looking outside of themselves. That's what it's like to improvise with others, to do difficult, present work with exceptional teams, and I chase that feeling.
